Welcome to the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI)
For 25 years, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) has combined research excellence, education, and collaboration to advance sustainability in the minerals and resources sector.
As the world’s largest co-located, interdisciplinary research institute, we unite seven specialist centres spanning geology, mineral processing, environmental management, health and safety, organisational effectiveness, social responsibility, and mineral security. This unique structure enables integrated, practical solutions to complex challenges.
Through SMI Chile our global reach drives collaboration across South America, where we co-develop projects and share knowledge to set new benchmarks for best practice in both regions. Our technology transfer company, JKTech, delivers laboratory services, specialised software, consultancy, and training to support the industry worldwide.
Students are a vital part of SMI's research community, contributing fresh ideas through our Higher Degree by Research program, while our professional development portfolio supports a skilled workforce through training grounded in cutting edge research.
